This was a truly amazing project. This fountain is designed to be a symbolic representation of the meaning behind the Yin & Yang Symbol. “Yin and yang can be thought of as complementary (rather than opposing) forces that interact to form a dynamic system in which the whole is greater than the assembled parts,” Georges Ohsawa 1976. We were inspired by these homeowners efforts to live a “green” lifestyle. The residence alone is completely powered off of solar panels. When they decided that they wanted to be able to collect 5,500 gallons of rainwater the yin & yang became clear. This fountain is designed to represent how modern society can complement nature, rather than oppose it. We chose to use natural stone as well as concrete blocks to portray this symbolically. The blocks represent the traditional home. The natural stones represent nature. When we work together with nature i.e. through solar panels, rainwater harvesting, energy efficient vehicles, using the front yard for an herbal garden (as they plan to do), butterfly/wildlife gardens, etc. We can create a better world for all of us. We hope this water feature will inspire others to think of how they too can create a complementary relation with nature.
